Women’s struggle in Honduras - Perspective of a soon solution

With reference to the verdict of expropriation of the National Agrarian Institute in Honduras, Isabel Garcia notes that “an important, but unfortunately not a definitive step” has been made. Isabel coordinates the women’s movement “10th of June”, who, in 2001, occupied a portion of land that was lying idle, but belonged to the CURLA National University of Honduras. Since then, the women’s movement is fighting for the devolution of the land. On 27 September, the Agrarian Institute decided to expropriate the land from the university and to transfer it to the women. This verdict nourishes the hope on a soon termination of the case. A few years ago the case still seemed to be unpromising and lost. The verdict of expropriation is a clear step forward, however, the women and their families expect the university to appeal against it. From the perspective of the 57 women, the good news has to be viewed with caution. On the one hand, they are very happy about the long wanted resolution. On the other hand, they know that their struggle for the land is not over yet: “We will not cease to fight, because we do not have other options. We will stay upright and determined, till we will receive the definitive communication: The land is yours!”
