On the occasion of World Food Day 2008 on October 16th, the Face-It-Act-Now campaign takes the opportunity to highlight the situation of the indigenous Guarani-Kaiowá in Brazil, and asks everyone to participate in a petition action.
In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil, the indigenous people Guarani-Kaiowá has become victim of a genuine genocide. Dozens of Indians have been killed or are hit by violence and suffer from hunger; many have died from hunger or have committed suicide. Main causes: expansion of agribusiness monocultures, the non-demarcation of their territory by the federal government, the inefficiency of the judiciary system and the non-recognition of their rights by the State and the local authorities.
In order to call for the necessary attention, the campaign has organised different simultaneous activities not only in Europe, but world wide. Currently a Brazilian delegation is attending public events, speaking at universities, informing the press, and meeting with a number of policy makers in Belgium, France, Hungary, and the Netherlands. In addition, in Brussels (Belgium) a symbolic action has taken place in support of the same case. Today, in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden, FIAN delegations will deliver petition letters to the Brazilian embassies in the respective countries. World wide, FIAN sections will address the Brazilian embassies in their countries. In various countries a post card action is running to address the Brazilian President. In order to complete these efforts, we need your support as well!
Act now and support the Face-It-Act-Now campaign by signing the same post card petition online…
