At the beginning of June 2008 the evictees in Mubende were informed that the next hearing in court would take place on the 26th of June. However, also this time the scheduled appointment was cancelled on short notice. Reason being that the tribunal in charge is being restructured and will receive an own department in Mubende. A new judge will be responsible for cases from Mubende. The restructuring should occur until the first of July. It is not clear yet when the new judge will take up his work.
Mid June the director of the Uganda Investment Authority, Dr. Maggie Kigozi, has asked Action Aid Uganda which compensation the evictees have claimed. The Neumann Kaffee Gruppe has threatened to abandon the coffee plantation if the compensation of the evictees will not be organised. The evictees have referred to their judicial claims. This positive development can be seen as a partial result of the increased pressure exerted by FIAN in May. We strongly hope that Neumann will take its responsibility.
During a heavy storm at the beginning of July, the houses of seven evicted families were destroyed. The families give Neumann the responsibility for the fact that due to the eviction they were forced to live in very unstable houses.
