The Impact of the Iduapriem Goldmine in Ghana

The Iduapriem goldmine is located in the Wassa West District and is currently run by AngloGold Ashanti. Farming families living on the concession of the Iduapriem goldmine, increasingly suffer from hunger, because their land has been taken over by the mine. In addition, water sources have run dry or are polluted, and boreholes are deficient. Action plans that were elaborated with the participation of the World Bank exist since 2003, but the company has repeatedly broken its promises and other actors involved - such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Bank – have failed to protect the right to food and water of the residents. The village Terebie with 700 inhabitants is particularly affected.
